THE DELICATE ART OF DEBATING

It’s been men’s oldest trade (well, almost), an admired skill; today we shall talk about those skillful users of words, the few who bask in the eternal light of intellect and charm, the masters of speech and charisma.

And those who are not…

For some strange reason, it was brought to my mind that at some point of discussion, all you really need to do is howl back louder than the other party. It’s as simple as that, you can have most reasonable point a player ever made (such as: “why are you always late?”) and eventually get the most pathetic excuse (“I didn’t think of calling”), it’s not that players aren’t appreciative (well – not all the time and we do experience other sensations too), we just tend to be unhappy when we feel certain things:

1) The lack of common curtsey (I think enough was said of this earlier on)

2) The terrible injustice of being discriminated (mostly in comparison to other players on some pathetic ground such as “why can he… and I can’t?” where the blank can be substituted for “open the door”, “use poison”, “use that spell without restriction” and many more.

3) And there’s always the XP problem of course…

Now you might ask yourself a few things:

1) Why should I care?

2) How can I solve this?

3) Don’t you players think your annoying with your petty demands?

Well, the basic answer is, that there’s no right or wrong, white or black, true or false, it will be best if we all just keep that in mind.

To be more precise, the one who runs things (who is doing that job because he wants to!) must remind himself from time to time that he is there for the purpose of having fun AND of us enjoying ourselves, you’d be surprised how much you’ll enjoy yourself if from time to time you’d see some player faces lighting up with glee when you reward their wits or plain luck with something bigger than the minimum…

A final thought, don’t you think it’ll be better if we all avoid bringing ill tempers to the game (this also includes dip-dip), it’s hard enough to handle eccentric characters let alone players and DM…

Join us next time when we learn to listen to someone else when he’s talking and eating with our mouths closed…
